Poetry Contest Guidelines
Second Place $100 & Third Place $50
We will Not accept Simultaneous Submissions or previously published work.
All work published by Kakalak must, in future publications (including online), credit Kakalak as first place of publication.
• Open to natives and current residents of North & South Carolina
• Entries must be postmarked by January 10, 2009
• Poetry Contest Final Judge is Bob Hicok
• Initial screening by editors Lisa Zerkle, Richard Allen Taylor and Beth Cagle Burt.
Official Rules:
1. Submit 1 to 5 poems printed on white 8 1/2 x 11 paper (three copies of each poem), any style, any subject, no more than one poem per page. Poems may not exceed 40 lines including stanza breaks. We would appreciate all poems in 12-point Times New Roman. Please do not submit poems in all bold, all caps, or all italics. No email submissions, please.
2. Poems must be original, unpublished in any medium (print or electronic), not under consideration elsewhere and must not have been selected for a monetary prize in any other contest.
3. Poet’s name, address, phone and email address must be provided on a cover sheet accompanying the manuscript and this information must NOT appear anywhere on the manuscript. Cover sheet should also include the following: titles of the poems entered and the poet’s 30-word (max) bio in third person.
4. Entries must be postmarked by January 10, 2009. Please include email address for notification if possible. Otherwise, enclose SASE for notification. No entries will be returned. All entrants will be notified by March 1, 2009.
5. Entry fee: $10 nonrefundable check or money order payable to Kakalak Poetry. $10 fee covers up to five poems.
6. All poets selected for publication will be required to sign a publishing agreement. All rights revert to authors upon publication with credit given to Kakalak as initial publisher.
