Editors Presented Information on Contributing & Being Accepted in Kakalak as part of the Charlotte Writers' Club Poetry Connection at Starbucks on Providence & Cherokee, Charlotte, NC

The editors of Kakalak discussed their upcoming anthology competition: from submitting an entry to publication. Some topics might include: what editors look for, some of the "knock-out" factors for poems submitted, how poems are selected, the steps in creating the book, the readings and events, the business challenges, and the challenge of creating, publishing, and marketing the book. The editors may also read some of their own poems they would have submitted to the contest if they allowed themselves to do so. The editor exclude their own poetry from the anthology.
 

At 7:00 pm, cappuccino and catching up with friends and/or meet new friends at the coffee house.
At 7:30 pm, listening to the editors of Kakalak discuss their upcoming anthology competition: from submitting an entry to publication.
At 8:30 pm, enjoying and/or participating in an open mic session.



Malaprops in Asheville, NC, Presents a Kakalak 2007 Book Release Reading and Signing

The Asheville diamond of bookstores, Malprops Bookstore/Cafe, has invited the Kakalak 2007 Anthology of Carolina Poets to hold a poetry reading and art presentation at their store. A Malaprop's Events Planner had this to say about the event, "We have a lot of fun with large poetry readings. We would love to have as many [readers and presenters] as possible." --Alsace Young-Walentine
Authors and artists presenting their work include: Heather Dearmon, Ken Chamlee, Michele Merrigan, Gilbert Allen, Michael Beadle, Catherine Carter, Tripp Howell, Patricia Podlipec, Pat Riviere-Seel, Allan Wolf, Heather Collings, and S. Craig Renfroe, Jr.
 


Kakalak 2007 Poets & Artists Celebrate Book Release at Joseph Beth Booksellers in South Park at Joseph Beth Booksellers, Charlotte, NC

Forty-plus poets, artists, and enthusiasts participated in the fantastic mid-October fun at one of Charlotte's South Park area stores. Joseph Beth Booksellers, hosted a poetry reading and art presentation by contributors of the Kakalak 2007 Anthology of Carolina Poets. Poets and artist included but were not limited to: Sally B. Miller, Hilda Downer, Kim Blum-Hyclak, Jenny Minchew, Diana Pinckney, Pat Rivere-Seel, Genie Cotner, Laura S. Moore, Don Mager, David Poston, Alice Toporoff Wallace, Blynn Field, Terri McCord, Leslie M. Rupracht, Clarence Eden, Jr., Cedric Tillman, and Julie Anne Cook.

The Joseph Beth event was a great success with many Kakalak 2007 Anthology authors reading and a couple Kakalak artists presenting their visual art and sharing a short synopsis of their work. After reading from and discussing the anthology works, contributors and other attendees stayed to have their books signed by Kakalak 2007 participants and editors as they met and greeted new and old friends.

Featuring Alex Grant and other contributors of the Kakalak 2007 Anthology

Kakalak Anthology of Carolina Poets features Alex Grant, first prize winner of the Kakalak 2006 Anthology, read from his award winning book and Kakalak 2007 Anthology, followed with presentations by poets and artists of the 2007 Anthology, at McIntyre’s Fine Books and Book Ends, Pittsboro, NC (919-452-3030, www.mcintyresbooks.com).

Presenters included but were not limited to :Sally Buckner, Pat Riviere-Seel, Janet Ireland Trail, Malaika King Albrecht, and Maureen Sherbondy. After the reading and sharing event, Kakalak 2007 participants and editors stayed to enjoy chatting with each other and signing books.

McIntyre's is located in Fearrington Village but the actual mailing address does not show up on internet maps, You can use the address for the Fire Station across the street: 5 Morris Rd., Pittsboro, NC 27312. Fearrington Village is 8 miles South of Chapel Hill on hwy 15-501. From Chapel Hill: Hwy 15-501 South approx 8 miles. Left at light at Fearrington Village. First right onto Village Way. The bookstore is the first building on the Left.


Charleston Celebrates Kakalak 2007 Poets & Artists

The Blue Bicycle Books Held a Reception for Kakalak 2007 Prior to the Reading Next Door at the French Hare Gallery and Galleria Boutique.

5:00 p.m. Reception and book signing at Blue Bicycle Books, 420 King St., Charleston, SC 29403.
Followed by a Reading at the French Hare Gallery and Galleria, 418 King St., Charleston, SC 29403.

Fifty-five attendees enjoyed the reading and sharing event along with bookshop and boutique shopping and a wine and cheese celebration of the Kakalak 2007 Anthology of Carolina Poets. Jonathan Sanchez, owner of the Blue Bicycle Books, organized the reading and reception. As a contributor to Kakalak 2007, he also shared in the celebration further by reading his poem "For the Violinist Whose Mother Died in August." Others presenters included but were not limited to: Heather Collings, Dennis Stiles, Gil Allen, Prudence Greene, Kit Loney, S. Craig Renfroe, Jr., Donna Goodman, Heather Dearmon, Eric Rogers, Deborah Lawson Scott

The Charleston City News had this to say prior to the event: "Last year's premiere of the Kakalak Anthology of Carolina Poets (Kakalak's folksy slang for "Carolina" an amalgamation with "Appalachia"), based out of Charlotte, was a hit. Local poetry maniacs packed the downtown library for a reading; the Charleston contingent of contributors in '06 was a who's who of local poets. This year's issue includes work by Donald Geddes, Donna Levine Gershon, Kit Loney, Jim Lundy, Susan Meyers, Jonathan Sanchez, Deborah Lawson Scott, and Denny Stiles. A wine and cheese reception will be followed by a book signing at Blue Bicycle Books and a reading next door in the French Hare boutique." Stephanie Barna

After the celebration, most poets and artists stayed on to enjoy greeting and signing books for each other.

A lively crowd of forty-plus people attended the book release of Kakalak 2007 Anthology of Carolina Poets at Barnes & Noble Arboretum on Saturday September 15, 7:00 p.m. Sixteen Kakalak poets read their poems from this years collection including: Marisa Rosenfeld, Wendy H. Gill, Gail Peck, Kimberlyn Blum-Hyclack, Jenny Minchew, Diana Pinckney, Leslie M. Rupracht, Heather Collins, David E. Poston, Alice Toporoff Wallace, Earl Wilcox, and S.Craig Renfroe, Jr., BeeJay Gwennap, Barbara Conrad, Trip Howell, and Cedric Tillman.





2006 EVENTS

Kakalak Reading in Charleston, SC at the Charleston County Public Library

On Saturday, October 21, 2006, 2 p.m. at the Charleston County Public Library, many poets, friends, an d family gathered to celebrate Kakalak 2006 and its participants. We all had a wonderful time in the comfort of the libraries main presentation hall. Each poet reader presented their own poem as well as a second poem to represent another poet included in the anthology.

The poetry judge, Susan Ludvigson, was in attendance as was South Carolina Poet Laureatte Marjory Wentworth, who read selections from all three of the Poets Laureatte in the guest section on f the anthology. All three co-editors, Lisa Zerkle, Richard Taylor and Beth Cagle Burt, attended and each also read a poem or two from the anthology. All in all, approximately a quarter of the anthology was presented on that beautiful Charleston afternoon. The event was organized by Linda Annas Ferguson and Susan Meyers.


Kakalak Poets & Artists Celebrate Release Party at Joseph-Beth Booksellers

The release event was a great success with about 30 people in attendance. Poetry readers and art presenters for the evening included the following:

Kakalak Poets & Artists Celebrate First Reading held at Barnes & Noble Arboretum

An exciting evening was had by all at the first reading of Kakalak 2006: An Anthology of Carolina Poets. Kakalak 2006 poets and artists were featured presenters at a Barnes & Noble Arboretum Poetry Reading in Charlotte, NC, on the evening of Wednesday, July 5. Many Kakalak Anthology authors read at the event and Kakalak artists presented their visual art and shared a short synopsis of their work from the anthology.The release event was a great success with about forty people in attendance. Poetry readers and art presenters for the evening included the following:
